Calling All Interpreters: Change is Here and You Are in the Eye of the Storm

InterpretAmerica had very humble beginnings: A conference interpreter and a medical interpreter coming together from across the great divide separating our areas of specialization with the simple goal of having our profession get to know itself. Over time, that vision has expanded to include helping the rest of the world get to know interpreting too.

Since the very first Summit in 2010, the drumbeat "change is coming, change is coming" has been steady and loud. This year, that beat has shifted, quickened, and taken on a new rhythm. It has risen to a crescendo signalling that  change is here.

"Having pride in our profession's long history does not mean that we should be averse to change. History inherently tells us that there is an ongoing progression."

This is the second of a two-part blog series highlighting thought leaders Jonathan Levy and Jost Zetzsche, our keynote speakers at the upcoming 5th InterpretAmerica Summit.

Today our focus is on Jost Zetzsche. Some might wonder why we have turned to one of translation's leading figures to keynote a conference targeting the interpreting profession. The simple answer: our sister industry has lived through many of the same changes shaking up our profession right now. There are valuable lessons to be shared, and mistakes we may still have time to avoid.

Jost Zetzsche, is a technical translator and widely published author, including the ever-popular A Translator's Tool Box for the 21st Century and Found in Translation, which he co-authored, a book about translation and interpretation for the general public.

RIDE THE WAVE!

Ride the Wave! is this year's InterpretAmerica 5 theme. The idea? Let's catch the huge wave of change bearing down upon us and ride it rather than getting rolled hard in the surf. Sure, it will be bumpy, we'll get wet, but we'll stay standing.

In our ongoing commitment to help interpreters catch that wave rather than get dunked by it, we will be highlighting a new technology that conference interpreters will likely be seeing soon: Hearing HotspotTM

In 2013, Interpreters on every continent (except Antarctica) joined us for our first live webcast from InterpretAmerica 4 in Reston, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. It was an experiment that helped us expand our reach and allowed us to connect interpreters from around the globe with our one-of-a-kind programming. Several of the sessions from that event can be seen on our Videos page.

As we have ramped up to this year’s Summit, interest in the topics we will be addressing and requests to webcast our content live again this year have been pouring in from interpreters around the world. This is why we are excited to announce that all plenary sessions from the 5th InterpretAmerica Summit on June 12 and 13 will be streamed live over the internet. And in true InterpretAmerica fashion, we’ve partnered with an innovative new company to do it.

"So I’ve been asking myself, given the changes in how interpretation services are being delivered…where will the true value of the interpreter be and who will be successful?"

We all know that "the times, they are a changin'" for the interpreting profession. The news is filled with reports on the introduction of new technologies into our workplace, pressure on our wages and work models, while at the same time the lack of highly-trained and competent interpreters is decried. Understanding the big picture trends behind change is challenging. Which is why we have turned to Jonathan Levy and Jost Zetzsche to be our Keynote Speakers at the upcoming 5th InterpretAmerica Summit, June 12-13 in Monterey, California.

We recently sat down with both of them to get a preview of the compelling insights they will be sharing at InterpretAmerica 5. In part one of this two-part blog, we share some of the valuable insights Jonathan Levy will bring in force to the Summit.

Jonathan Levy, Linguistic Director at Transperfect Remote Interpreting, is uniquely positioned to help us understand major trends impacting the interpreting profession at InterpretAmerica 5.

EXPERTISE FROM ACROSS THE INTERPRETING FIELD AND BEYOND:

Earlier this month our call for proposals closed and we sat down to craft the rest of the 5th InterpretAmerica Summit program.

We are excited and very proud to present it to you today. We believe it is our strongest lineup yet.

Our goal this year is to help all of us with the information and tools we need to ride out this intense time of change and transformation, and to do so with a dash of inspiration, a sprinkle of fun and a strong dose of collaboration and colleagiality. At this year's installment of InterpretAmerica 5, among other things, you will:

  • Learn from those with their fingertips on the pulse of coming trends in our field,
  • Hear from a panel of industry representatives and professional association leadership about the state of interpreting,
  • Have a chance to try out cutting-edge technology for delivering interpreting services and speak directly with the engineers and innovators who designed it,
