The 4th think! Interpreting is here!

By now, we all understand that change is transforming many aspects of the interpreting profession. Currently, we are caught in a frustrating moment where the facof change has been accepted, but many are waiting to see what others do first.

This week Barry and Katharine are in the incomparable city of Amsterdam for the 4th think! InterpretingInterpretAmerica has been partnering with the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) during its annual conference since 2014 to bring interpreting-related content to the world's biggest language services industry event.

Indigenous Interpreting Training Arrives

Interpreting in this country faces a crisis. There is an exploding need for trained, professional indigenous language interpreters. Indigenous migrants from all over the globe have left their native lands and come to America and Europe. They live, work and now access services in their new homes and we need a way to talk to them.

The problem? They speak languages previously overlooked by our profession. And they come from cultures often so profoundly different from our own that current interpreting training practices are not enough to bring new interpreters into the field.

InterpretAmerica Co-President Katharine Allen has dedicated a large part of the last several years working on projects as part of dedicated and talented teams to change that reality. Most days we labor in quiet. The projects we work on build incrementally and the world moves on around us. But some days are special. On some days, we get to shout our accomplishments from the mountaintops and celebrate something new in the world.

INTRODUCTION

When it comes to remote interpreting, opinions and anecdotes abound. Missing is hard research to identify trends, challenges and opportunities. Earlier this year, Common Sense Advisory conducted some of its most extensive interpreting market research since 2010, when InterpretAmerica commissioned the first exhaustive--and so far only--interpreting market study covering North America, which we made available free of charge as a service to the interpreting profession.

In this guest blog post, Hélène Pielmeier, a Senior Analyst at Common Sense Advisory, shares some valuable insights into interpreting delivery platforms (IDPs) and why interpreters should take a serious look at them.

Interpreting Delivery Platforms: Should You Get On the Bandwagon?

Recent technological advances have led to an explosion of interpreting delivery platform (IDP) options that enable remote, video, telephone, and even machine interpretation. In this blog post, we explore four categories of IDPs, the challenges with selling them, issues with supply chain readiness, and what all industry participants must do to prepare.

INTERPRETING LOSES A PIONEER BUT GAINS A LEGACY

Many of those who have chosen interpreting as a profession see it as a calling as much as a way to make a living. We care about communication and believe deep down that what we do makes the world a better place.

Since our founding in 2009, at InterpretAmerica, we have worked constantly to build bridges between interpreters of different specialties, interpreter associations of different kinds, and the professional and business sides of the language industry.

Along the way, we have had the opportunity to meet some outstanding people who have made interpreting better. William “Bill” Graeper was one of those people.

The third installment of think! Interpreting at GALA 2016 in New York City was a smashing success. We want to thank all the sponsors, presenters and exhibitors for making it possible. Over the three days of the conference we were able to sit down with several attendees to ask them why they chose to think! Interpreting. Over the coming weeks we will feature several videos of the conversations we had. We hope you enjoy them.

For this video blog, InterpretAmerica Co-President Barry Slaughter Olsen speaks with Stephanie Fiorito from Continental Interpreting about why they chose to think! Interpreting

think! Interpreting is going strong for the third year running. This year's installment is set for March 20-23 in New York City. Yet we find that many are still confused about just what think! Interpreting is. Here at InterpretAmerica, we've been organizing conferences for seven years, starting with the InterpretAmerica Summit in 2010 and later the first think! Interpreting in 2014. The Summit is bi-annual gathering of interpreting leadership and stakeholders that is run solely by InterpretAmerica.
