When Change Is for the Best - Interpreting Is Moving Ahead

Our world is awash in negative news right now. From politics to natural disasters to a sense of disruption and uncontrollable change, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.

The interpreting profession is no different. The much-used term "disruption" is still the best concept to capture the intense change and adjustment our field is going through. Worse yet, in the minds of many, this change is being forced upon us from outside forces and is largely perceived as negative. We didn't ask for it, it just is.

For many, the best kind of change is always the change we choose: Change we envision, orchestrate and implement. 

Here's the good news: Despite the sweeping cultural, technological and workplace changes impacting almost every profession around the world, our humble profession of interpreting is actually quite good at orchestrated change.

Polarization is a sign of the times and like it or not, the interpreting profession has not escaped its own grand divide.

Remote interpreting, especially the arrival of video remote interpreting, has split our field into distinct and often opposing camps.

At InterpretAmerica we’re spending more and more time out "in the field," speaking at conferences, training interpreters and end users of interpreting services, attending meetings and interacting on social media. All our efforts have one goal in mind—to raise the profile of interpreting. We constantly ask questions and then listen to how the different groups of the language services equation (interpreters, language service companies, tech vendors and end users) respond. We also do our best to answer the questions we receive.

In this blog, we’ll answer several questions that emerged during a recent presentation we were invited to give at the annual conference of the Association of Language Companies (ALC 2017) in Miami, Florida. As is far too often the case, there were more questions than time to answer them.
