Polarization is a sign of the times and like it or not, the interpreting profession has not escaped its own grand divide.

Remote interpreting, especially the arrival of video remote interpreting, has split our field into distinct and often opposing camps.

Why did we decide to move forward with Lenguas 2017?

Mexico is in mourning but working to rebuild and move forward. One of the first steps in that process is to reestablish, to the extent possible and as circumstances permit, a sense of normalcy. First, we confirmed that our two event hotels and our venue, the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, were not damaged by the earthquake. All three buildings have been declared safe and open for business.

On Monday, schools that were not physically damaged reopened across the city, and our children are returning to school. Similarly, we need to return to our normal activities, because we are convinced that staying the course is one way for us to contribute to Mexican society.

The 4th think! Interpreting is here!

By now, we all understand that change is transforming many aspects of the interpreting profession. Currently, we are caught in a frustrating moment where the facof change has been accepted, but many are waiting to see what others do first.

This week Barry and Katharine are in the incomparable city of Amsterdam for the 4th think! InterpretingInterpretAmerica has been partnering with the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) during its annual conference since 2014 to bring interpreting-related content to the world's biggest language services industry event.

Indigenous Interpreting Training Arrives

[fa icon="calendar'] Nov 14, 2016 7:36:39 AM / by Katharine Allen & Barry S. Olsen posted in interpreting, Training, language access, Indigenous Interpreting

Interpreting in this country faces a crisis. There is an exploding need for trained, professional indigenous language interpreters. Indigenous migrants from all over the globe have left their native lands and come to America and Europe. They live, work and now access services in their new homes and we need a way to talk to them.

The problem? They speak languages previously overlooked by our profession. And they come from cultures often so profoundly different from our own that current interpreting training practices are not enough to bring new interpreters into the field.

InterpretAmerica Co-President Katharine Allen has dedicated a large part of the last several years working on projects as part of dedicated and talented teams to change that reality. Most days we labor in quiet. The projects we work on build incrementally and the world moves on around us. But some days are special. On some days, we get to shout our accomplishments from the mountaintops and celebrate something new in the world.

INTRODUCTION

When it comes to remote interpreting, opinions and anecdotes abound. Missing is hard research to identify trends, challenges and opportunities. Earlier this year, Common Sense Advisory conducted some of its most extensive interpreting market research since 2010, when InterpretAmerica commissioned the first exhaustive--and so far only--interpreting market study covering North America, which we made available free of charge as a service to the interpreting profession.

In this guest blog post, Hélène Pielmeier, a Senior Analyst at Common Sense Advisory, shares some valuable insights into interpreting delivery platforms (IDPs) and why interpreters should take a serious look at them.

Interpreting Delivery Platforms: Should You Get On the Bandwagon?

Recent technological advances have led to an explosion of interpreting delivery platform (IDP) options that enable remote, video, telephone, and even machine interpretation. In this blog post, we explore four categories of IDPs, the challenges with selling them, issues with supply chain readiness, and what all industry participants must do to prepare.
