Indigenous Interpreting Training Arrives

Interpreting in this country faces a crisis. There is an exploding need for trained, professional indigenous language interpreters. Indigenous migrants from all over the globe have left their native lands and come to America and Europe. They live, work and now access services in their new homes and we need a way to talk to them.

The problem? They speak languages previously overlooked by our profession. And they come from cultures often so profoundly different from our own that current interpreting training practices are not enough to bring new interpreters into the field.

InterpretAmerica Co-President Katharine Allen has dedicated a large part of the last several years working on projects as part of dedicated and talented teams to change that reality. Most days we labor in quiet. The projects we work on build incrementally and the world moves on around us. But some days are special. On some days, we get to shout our accomplishments from the mountaintops and celebrate something new in the world.

"Having pride in our profession's long history does not mean that we should be averse to change. History inherently tells us that there is an ongoing progression."

This is the second of a two-part blog series highlighting thought leaders Jonathan Levy and Jost Zetzsche, our keynote speakers at the upcoming 5th InterpretAmerica Summit.

Today our focus is on Jost Zetzsche. Some might wonder why we have turned to one of translation's leading figures to keynote a conference targeting the interpreting profession. The simple answer: our sister industry has lived through many of the same changes shaking up our profession right now. There are valuable lessons to be shared, and mistakes we may still have time to avoid.

Jost Zetzsche, is a technical translator and widely published author, including the ever-popular A Translator's Tool Box for the 21st Century and Found in Translation, which he co-authored, a book about translation and interpretation for the general public.

"So I’ve been asking myself, given the changes in how interpretation services are being delivered…where will the true value of the interpreter be and who will be successful?"

We all know that "the times, they are a changin'" for the interpreting profession. The news is filled with reports on the introduction of new technologies into our workplace, pressure on our wages and work models, while at the same time the lack of highly-trained and competent interpreters is decried. Understanding the big picture trends behind change is challenging. Which is why we have turned to Jonathan Levy and Jost Zetzsche to be our Keynote Speakers at the upcoming 5th InterpretAmerica Summit, June 12-13 in Monterey, California.

We recently sat down with both of them to get a preview of the compelling insights they will be sharing at InterpretAmerica 5. In part one of this two-part blog, we share some of the valuable insights Jonathan Levy will bring in force to the Summit.

Jonathan Levy, Linguistic Director at Transperfect Remote Interpreting, is uniquely positioned to help us understand major trends impacting the interpreting profession at InterpretAmerica 5.

From our perspective, we can see what's on the horizon for interpreting...

Shortly before InterpretAmerica 4 in 2013, we introduced a new website. It allowed us to livestream presentations to virtual attendees around the world. We were able to consolidate our blogs and have more control over how our site looked. It allowed us to interact with our followers like never before. But before we knew it, our shiny new platform wasn’t able to do all that we needed it to do.

That is why today we are launching a totally new website built from the ground up. This new site will help us carry out our mission of “raising the profile of interpreting” like never before.

Let's take a quick tour of the most important changes, which we hope will help bring the world of interpreting, including the exciting events we have planned for 2015, closer to you.In other words, four reasons why you should visit the new site.
