If Technology Is Flipping How Interpreter Services Are Being Delivered, Where Is The Market?
Here at InterpretAmerica we spend a lot of time tracking the changes in our profession. Since our services are needed wherever people try to communicate across language barriers, it is inevitable that as the platforms people use to communicate change, so too, do the platforms that we use.
No matter which sector you work in, things are in flux and we are being asked to adapt to new work models that are often still in beta. Video platforms get adopted willy nilly by hospital systems to "save costs" with no regard to patient care and communication flow. Conference interpreters are asked to plug in headsets and interpret meetings online whose audio is so garbled and static-filled the job is actually impossible. Face-to-face positions are being eliminated in many places. The much-touted "booming translation and interpreting market" seems either fiction or impossibly out-of-reach.
