The Interpreting Market Is Booming, So How Come I Don't Have A Job?

Published: 21 October 2013

If Technology Is Flipping How Interpreter Services Are Being Delivered, Where Is The Market?

Here at InterpretAmerica we spend a lot of time tracking the changes in our profession. Since our services are needed wherever people try to communicate across language barriers, it is inevitable that as the platforms people use to communicate change, so too, do the platforms that we use.

No matter which sector you work in, things are in flux and we are being asked to adapt to new work models that are often still in beta. Video platforms get adopted willy nilly by hospital systems to "save costs" with no regard to patient care and communication flow. Conference interpreters are asked to plug in headsets and interpret meetings online whose audio is so garbled and static-filled the job is actually impossible. Face-to-face positions are being eliminated in many places. The much-touted "booming translation and interpreting market" seems either fiction or impossibly out-of-reach.

This Thursday, October 24th, InterpretAmerica Co-Presidents Barry S. Olsen and Katharine Allen will be hosting a Webinar for GALA titled "The Interpreting Market: What You Need To Know." We are partnering with GALA this year in several initiatives to help expand awareness of the importance of interpreting inside the broader language services industry, which is dominated by translation

and localization services.

As interpreting grows far beyond its origins and struggles to adapt to new market demands and new technological delivery platforms, where jobs can be found changes, as do job descriptions. The explosive need for smooth, seamless multilingual communication nationally and globally brings us clients who care less and less about how their communication needs are met and more and more about being able to communicate in a growing number of scenarios.

Join us for this information webinar as we outline the current interpreting market, new trends in the service delivery, and where those elusive new jobs can be found.

Presented by InterpretAmerica Co-Presidents Barry S. Olsen and Katharine Allen 24 October 11:00 EDT (17:00 CEST)

In addition to the webinar, come back often to this blog for updated information on our second collaborative event with GALA, the special think! Interpreting track at GALA's 2013 Business of Language conference in Istanbul, Turkey in March.
