Big News from InterpretAmerica on International Translation Day!

Today, as interpreters and translators, we celebrate our day. For InterpretAmerica, International Translation Day is special. We work hard to fulfill our mission to raise the profile of interpreting, and today we are very excited to announce two unique interpreting events for next year that we think will bring real value to you and to our profession.

First, InterpretAmerica 6 is officially set for Washington D.C. next June. Second, we are very happy to present you the inaugural launch of a brand new conference: Lenguas 2017. Lenguas will take place in Mexico City next fall and represents a new collaborative between InterpretAmerica and the Fundación Italia Morayta.

The InterpretAmerica Summit, our sixth installment, is headed back to Washington, D.C., the place where it all began.

Much has changed for the better since we launched the InterpretAmerica Summit in the U.S. capital in 2010.

On the upside, we know ourselves better. Our associations are stronger. Our practitioners are better trained. Our education is expanding. Recognition by the general public of the importance of what we do is growing. Our leadership is maturing. And as technology has improved, demand for our services has increased and more interpreters are finding more work across the board.

And just in time, because we all know that interpreting is in full flux. We now ride the rough waters that were just on the horizon during our first Summit in 2010. Traditional work practices, compensation models, work platforms and hiring practices seem at risk of being swept away. The advent of truly functional remote technology platforms combined with the acute shortage of trained, qualified interpreters just when demand is skyrocketing is creating a lot of stress and anxiety. End-users want more for less. Agencies try to fill their needs with new service delivery strategies. And interpreters are being asked to change how they work, with little to no guarantee their work conditions or their ability to make a living will be preserved.

Our field is engaged in a heated debate about how to face these changes. We see growing mistrust, frustration and even anger between interpreters and those who hire them. In short, the fundamental need for a profession-wide forum has not changed.

We'll be changing things up for InterpretAmerica 6. Our format will be work-intensive. We want to address the difficult issues with people from all sides of the profession who can help make a difference. Lenguas 2017

Mark your calendars! InterpretAmerica is excited to announce a new collaboration with the Italia Morayta Foundation to bring interpreting-focused programming and continuing education workshops to Mexico. Just as in the U.S., the interpreting profession in Mexico is also growing, evolving and adapting to an ever-changing market.

You have a date in September 2017 in Mexico City with Spanish-speaking colleagues from north and south of the border and from around the world! Read on to learn more about this great initiative.

Lenguas 2017 is an international forum created to bring together interpreters and translators under one roof to discuss best practices, learn about current market conditions and receive practical training.

The Forum will take place September 28 to September 30, 2017, in Mexico City. The working languages of the conference will be Spanish and English. The Italia Morayta Foundation has invited InterpretAmerica to design the program for interpreting and will collaborate with different organizations for translation-related content.

Thursday, September 28, 2017, will be dedicated to plenary sessions. Friday the 29th and Saturday the 30th will offer practical workshops, professional development and continuing education sessions. The program will include social and cultural activities to offer participants opportunities for entertainment, networking and exchange.
