Lenguas 2017 Moves Forward Despite Tragedy

Why did we decide to move forward with Lenguas 2017?
Mexico is in mourning but working to rebuild and move forward. One of the first steps in that process is to reestablish, to the extent possible and as circumstances permit, a sense of normalcy. First, we confirmed that our two event hotels and our venue, the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, were not damaged by the earthquake. All three buildings have been declared safe and open for business.
On Monday, schools that were not physically damaged reopened across the city, and our children are returning to school. Similarly, we need to return to our normal activities, because we are convinced that staying the course is one way for us to contribute to Mexican society.
When the idea of holding Lenguas emerged, we sought to bring together under one roof the different sectors of the of the translation and interpreting professions in Mexico. Over the last few days, we have seen how these different groups have gone to work using their professional skills or simply by lending a hand to those who so desperately need help. We are proud to belong to the language industry and are sure that Lenguas will serve as an opportunity for reflection and mutual support.
Ana Morales Marin, winner of the Italia Morayta award for her research on the psychological impacts of interpreting, highlights the importance of helping interpreters relieve stress after working in emergency situations by sharing their thoughts and feelings about what they have lived through, understanding that their reactions are both logical and shared by others, and receiving support from groups that have lived through similar situations. Morales also notes the importance of having more experienced colleagues share their experiences as well.
Can Lenguas help the earthquake victims in Mexico City?
Yes. We are working with Educadores sin fronteras, a non-governmental organization that is collecting both monetary and in-kind donations to help victims in Mexico City and the state of Morelos. In Mexico City alone, there are some 650 schools that are in need of repair. Financial contributions are tax deductible in Mexico and can be made to the following account:

Donations in kind (non-perishable food items, diapers, blankets, sleeping pads, tents) can be brought to the Lenguas 2017 registration tables and will be delivered to Educadores sin fronteras who will distribute them in the different towns and villages between Jojutla and Puente de Ixtla in the state of Morelos.
In addition, we invite all Lenguas 2017 attendees to bring a children’s book or video that storytellers can either distribute, read or show to children one of the various shelters.
Educadores sin fronteras also maintains a library of educational titles for children, parents, and teachers on a range of important subjects like domestic violence and child abuse prevention and gender and social equality. Some of these books have been translated in to a number of indigenous languages. The Lenguas 2017 community can also help by translating some of these texts. Those interested in supporting this cause by providing translation services are asked to contact Gonzalo Celorio Morayta at presidencia@italiamorayta.org. The Italia Morayta Foundation will provide a modest donation to the translators who offer their services to translate these materials.

¿Por qué decidimos seguir adelante con Lenguas 2017?
México está de luto pero está luchando para reconstruirse y salir adelante. Uno de los primeros pasos es restablecer, en la medida de los posible y dentro de las circunstancias, la normalidad. En primer lugar, verificamos con los dos hoteles sede y con el Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso la situación de los inmuebles y los tres espacios están funcionando y han sido declarados seguros.
El lunes se empezaron a reabrir las escuelas que no estaban físicamente dañadas y nuestros hijos regresaron a clases. Nos toca a nosotros hacer lo propio, pues estamos convencidos de que mantener el curso es una manera de contribuir con la sociedad mexicana.
Cuando surgió la idea de Lenguas, buscábamos reunir bajo un mismo techo a los distintos gremios que conforman la industria de la traducción y la interpretación en México. En los últimos días hemos visto cómo estos grupos diversos han trabajado dentro y fuera de sus áreas de especialidad para ayudar a quienes tanto lo necesitan. Nos sentimos orgullosos de pertenecer a esta industria y estamos seguros de que Lenguas será un espacio de reflexión y ayuda mutua.
Ana Morales Marín, ganadora del Premio Italia Morayta por su trabajo El impacto psicológico en el intérprete, advierte la necesidad de aliviar el estrés que se ha sufrido tras una situación de emergencia mediante la expresión de los sentimientos y pensamientos acerca de lo que se ha vivido, la comprensión de que las reacciones que se tienen son algo lógico y común, el apoyo en grupos que se han visto implicados en situaciones similares. También indica que es importante que los más experimentados compartan sus experiencias al respecto.
¿Puede Lenguas ayudar a los damnificados de los terremotos de la Ciudad de México?
Sí. Estaremos trabajando con Educadores sin fronteras, una organización no gubernamental que está recabando donaciones en especie y en efectivo para ayudar a damnificados en la Ciudad de México y en el Estado de Morelos. Sólo en la CDMX hay 650 escuelas que necesitan ser reparadas. Los donativos monetarios son deducibles de impuestos y se pueden hacer a siguiente cuenta:

Los donativos en especie (alimentos no perecederos, pañales para niños y adultos, cobijas, colchonetas, tiendas de campaña) se pueden entregar en las mesas de registro de Lenguas 2017, y serán entregados a Educadores sin fronteras quienes los distribuirán en los distintos pueblos entre Jojutla y Puente de Ixtla en el Estado de Morelos.
Además, pedimos a todos los asistentes que lleven un libro y una película para niños que los cuentacuentos de Educadores sin fronteras podrán distribuir, leer o proyectar en los distintos albergues.
Educadores sin fronteras tiene además un catálogo de libros educativos para niños, padres de familia y maestros sobre temas tan importantes como la prevención de la violencia y el maltrato infantil, y la igualdad de género y social. Algunos de sus títulos han sido traducidos a algunas lenguas indígenas nacionales y la comunidad de Lenguas 2017 también puede contribuir con la traducción de algunos de estos textos.
